===========================================================================================
== Persimmon Seeds to Help Predict Type of Winter ==
===========================================================================================

In this world full of high-tech weather models and advanced forecasting techniques, sometimes it is nice to also approach weather forecasting from a more natural perspective. I admit, going by signs in nature alone is not exactly the best and most accurate way to forecast the weather, but it is still wise to stop and take a look at what mother nature is trying to tell us.

There is an old folklore that says that the seeds of a Persimmon can determine what kind of Winter we will have. To do this, you take some persimmons (ones that have already fell to the ground), take the seeds out of them, slice the seeds in half, and observe the shape inside of the seeds. You should see either a spoon, fork, or knife.

Here is what you should expect your Winter to be like, depending on which shapes you see:

Spoon = Cold and Snowy
Fork = Mild and Dry
Knife = VERY Cold and Icy

It's best that you cut open at least 10 seeds, so that you can get a better overall sample of your results. For me however, I decided to cut open 100 seeds, over a 10 week period. Here is what I found:

===========================================================================================

-- September 6, 2009 --

I believe most of these seeds are not totally mature yet, so most of them don't even show a definite shape yet, only the utensil handles are visible. However, there are 3 out of 10 that definitely show a complete utensil shape. Numbers 4 and 6 both show a spoon, while number 7 shows a knife. As far as I can tell, the last 3 very faintly show knives. I see no forks in any of them. According to this sample, our Winter should be very cold, with more ice than snow.

-- September 13, 2009 --

Well, this is a very tough one to figure out! Many of these seeds are once again not totally mature yet, and when I tried to cut into them, they would not cooperate well at all. From what I can tell, numbers 2, 3, 4, and 6 are spoons, numbers 8 and 10 are knives, and number 7 looks like either a fork or knife, but I'm going with fork (maybe a steak fork? LOL). Numbers 1, 5, and 9 are just too hard for me to figure out. According to this sample, our Winter should be cold, with more snow than ice (opposite from last week's sample), with perhaps a warm and dry spell sometime during the season.

-- September 20, 2009 --

These were a bit easier to cut into than last week's seeds, but many of these are still not showing any definite shape inside. In fact, only two of them show a definite utensil shape, and those two are numbers 5 (which shows a spoon) and 6 (which shows a knife). Number 1 also faintly resembles a spoon. Looking at number 7 up close, it appears that where the top half of the utensil would be located, the handle is off center of that, so I'll go ahead and declare number 7 as a knife, since that's how a knife is generally shaped. Numbers 3, 9, (perhaps 10 as well?) appear to be knifes also, and the rest are just too hard for me to determine at this point. According to this sample, our Winter should be very cold, with MUCH more ice than snow.

-- September 27, 2009 --

As you can see, these seeds were pretty easy to cut into, unlike the previous couple of batches. Still, there are a few that don't show a whole utensil shape. Numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6 look like knives, even though it's kind of hard to tell from looking at this picture. I will still go ahead and declare these as knives, along with number 10. Numbers 3 and 9 look like forks, while 4 and 7 look like spoons. Number 8 looks a bit strange to me, and I can't really figure out if it is a spoon or knife. I think I'll go with spoon as my final answer. According to this sample, our Winter should be very cold, but with warm spells throughout the season, with more ice than snow, and moisture may be limited at times.

-- October 4, 2009 --

The seeds from this sample were fairly easy to slice into, and unlike the past few samples, every seed in this sample has a utensil shape. Numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, and 10 all seem to show spoons, and even though number 7 doesn't exactly look like a spoon, but after examining this particular seed up close, I'm going with 7 as a spoon, because of the spoon shaped indention that I found surrounding the area where the spoon would have been located. Numbers 3, 5, 8, and 9 look like knives. I see no forks in any of these. According to this sample, our Winter should be very cold, but not extremely cold. Also, expect more snow than ice.

-- October 11, 2009 --

NOTE: This sample was performed on October 12, however it is meant for the 11th.

These seed for the most part are easy to read, however there are a couple than aren't so easy. Numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10 all show knives, while the only spoon I see is number 8. Number 3 is interesting, because I don't see anything, not even the utensil handle. I will just leave this one as an undetermined seed, along with number 5, which DOES show a utensil handle, but nothing else. I see no forks in any of these. According to this sample, our Winter should be extremely cold, with lots of icy weather, but not much in the way of snowfall.

-- October 18, 2009 --

In this sample, it seems as if most of these utensils are oddly shaped. Numbers 1, 4, and 9 appear to be spoons. I believe number 5 is a knife, even though the middle part is missing. Number 10 also looks like a knife, a very thin one at that! Number 3 is an interesting one, in that it appears to be bent out of shape. After looking at this one closely, I will declare number 3 as a knife. Another very interesting seed to examine is number 8, which as you can see doesn't really need to be examined up close at all! This is the largest utensil I've ever seen in a seed so far! It actually looks like it could either be a spoon or a knife, depending on how you look at it, but I think I'll officially go with spoon on this one, because it appears to be a bit rounded at the base. Numbers 2, 6, and 7 don't show any definite utensil shape. I see no forks in any of these. According to this sample, our Winter should be fairly cold, with more snow than ice. There may be a HUGE snowstorm sometime during the Winter (going by the large spoon in number eight). However, if this utensil is indeed a knife instead of a spoon, this could mean a HUGE ice storm, and extremely cold conditions.

-- October 25, 2009 --

It seemed as if these seeds were a bit difficult to cut into. However, most of these do show some sort of utensil shape. Numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 8 all appear to be knives. Number 4 looks a little like a knife as well, but looking at this seed closely, it appears to be a fork; note the small spikes at the top of the utensil. Number 9 is most definitely a spoon. I cannot figure out what number 6 is, so this one will be declared as undetermined. Number 10 is interesting, in that it almost appears to have two layers, and the two layers show two different shapes. The bottom layer appears to be a knife, while the top layer looks like a huge spoon. Judging by the size, I will go ahead and declare this seed as a spoon, since it's the larger shape. According to this sample, our Winter should be extremely cold, with perhaps a brief warm spell sometime during the season. Much more ice than snow can be expected. However, there may be one storm that dumps plenty of snow AND ice (suggested by number 10).

-- November 1, 2009 --

This is my third and final month of performing these seed observations. I may even have to quit before the end of this month, because I've been noticing that there are less and less persimmons on the ground now, and the seeds inside of the ones I do find are becoming harder to deal with, and a little harder to read as well. Anyway, in this particular batch, numbers 1, 2, 5, 7, and 10 all seem to be knives, albeit some of them are oddly shaped knives. Number 3 shows a spoon. I'm not completely certain about number 4, but I'm going to go with fork for that one. Looks like a bent fork, not sure though what that means weather-wise. Number 6 appears to be mostly a knife, but a somewhat transparent spoon shape is also present, but I will still go ahead and declare this one as a knife, since it's the more pronounced utensil shape. Numbers 8 and 9 also show some transparency in their own way. Both show mainly a spoon shape, but a sort of ghostly image of an even larger spoon is also visible. I have noticed this trend now for the past couple of weeks, of seeds showing more than one definite shape, and they are usually fairly large utensils. Perhaps this suggests that some big snowstorms and/or ice storms may occur during the Winter. According to this sample, our Winter may have a brief warm spell, but for the most part it should be extremely cold, with more ice than snow. Watch out for a few big storms this Winter. Perhaps a big snow and ice storm (suggested by number 6), and maybe a couple of big snowstorms (suggested by numbers 8 and 9).

-- November 8, 2009 --

As I mentioned in last weeks sample, there are fewer and fewer persimmons (good persimmons) to be found, so I have decided to make this 10th sample my final one. After today, I'll remove the persimmon seed section of this blog, and will post my entire collection on my personal website. I'll provide a link to it in the "Other Links" section of this blog. Also, I will show my results via Microsoft Spreadsheet charts and graphs; they should help summarize my findings, and perhaps better understand exactly what the seeds tended to suggest overall. Anyway, on to the results of my last sample: numbers 1, 3, 8, and 10 all look like knives, 9 as well, a bent knife, which by the way has also occurred in the previous sample. Numbers 2 and 7 show spoons. Number 5 is hard to tell, but I do believe there is a faint spoon shape at the bottom, almost like a baby spoon. Number 4, just like the past few samples, show some sort of addition transparent shape along with the more pronounced one. In this case, both shapes show a spoon: one small and one large. Number 6 will be left undetermined, and I see no forks in any of these seeds. According to this sample, our Winter should be very cold, with more ice than snow. However, going by seed number 4, perhaps we will have a large snowstorm at some point during the season. Also, going by seed number 5, some light flurries may be in the forecast at times.
